A properly prepped and painted exterior costs a fraction of that and fixes the thing you actually notice from the road — and inside, a fresh coat resets a whole room in a weekend.

On paint

We use Sherwin-Williams by default on every job — unless you’d rather we used a different brand, in which case we’ll use whatever you specify. We reach for it not because it’s a name to drop, but because coatings are where the difference between good and cheap shows up fastest — in how the color holds and how long the film stays flexible through a Kentucky and Tennessee summer-to-winter swing.

Already picked a color? Bring it. Haven’t? That’s a normal part of the conversation, and there’s no rush on it.

How we actually do it

Inside or out, the order is the same — the surface gets made sound before any color goes on. What changes is the prep.

   Walk it with you

   We look at the job together — inside or out, what’s failing, what’s fine, what needs patching or priming rather than paint. You get a written estimate off the back of that, not a number over the phone.

   Protect and prep

   Outside, that’s a soft wash, then scraping and sanding everything loose. Inside, it’s filling nail holes and dents, sanding smooth, and masking off floors, trim and fixtures. Nothing gets painted until the surface is sound.

   Prime what needs it

   Bare wood outside, fresh patches and water stains inside — they get spot-primed so the topcoat goes on even and stays put. Paint sticks to primer; it doesn’t stick to weathered timber or bare drywall mud.

   Caulk and cut in

   Gaps get sealed and lines get cut by hand — around trim, windows, ceilings and corners. Clean lines are where a paint job is judged, so it’s where the time goes.

   Paint in the right finish

   Sherwin-Williams — or the brand you chose — goes on in the sheen that suits the surface: tougher finishes where they take abuse, flatter where you want a wall to disappear.

   Clean up

   The room, or the yard, goes back the way we found it. When we leave, the only sign we were there is the finish.

Here’s the thing about “properly prepped”: it’s doing a lot of work, it’s the part nobody sees, and that’s exactly why it’s the first thing to get skipped.

Why paint fails early

When paint lifts, peels or flakes a year or two after it went on, it’s almost never the paint’s fault. It’s nearly always something that got skipped underneath it:

• It went over chalk, mildew or grime. Outside, old siding sheds a fine powder; inside, kitchen and bath walls carry a film of grease and dust. Paint over either and it’s gripping dirt, not the wall.
• A loose or glossy surface wasn’t dealt with. A new coat over failing paint fails on the old coat’s schedule — and fresh paint over a slick, glossy wall with no scuff or primer just slides off.
• Bare spots never got primed. Weathered wood outside, and new drywall mud or water stains inside, all drink paint unevenly and let go of it unevenly — unless they’re primed first.
• Moisture was still in the surface. Outside, from washing at full pressure and painting before it dried; inside, from coating a bathroom or a fresh patch before it cured. Trapped moisture pushes the film right back off.

Every one of those is a prep failure, and every one of them is avoidable. It just takes longer, which is why the cheapest quote is usually the most expensive one in the end.
